Metalcraft of Mayville’s old milling machine for large parts failed just when the company began seeing increased pressure to take on projects requiring more flexibility and capabilities. Two five-axis HMCs from Toyoda helped the company stay in step with the trend.  By adding five-axis machining to its core competencies, Metalcraft gained greater control over its lead times by eliminating operations and setups by as much as half: an important benefit in light of a push from OEM customers for the full production package. The FH1250SX-5Axis horizontal machining center is equipped with a 15,000-rpm, 400-Nm, high-torque spindle with low heat generation. It is designed to machine of a variety of materials ranging from aluminum to titanium. The large-scale capabilities of the FH1250SX-5Axis reduced Metalcraft’s need for specialized tools while contributing to better tool life, even on the larger machines with hard metal applications.
